CAASPP State Testing

Every year, California students take several statewide tests. When combined with other measures such as grades, class work, and teacher observations, these tests give families and teachers a more complete picture of their child’s learning. You can use the results to identify where your child is doing well and where they might need more support.

Near the end of each school year, students in grade 3 and higher take summative assessments. The umbrella term we use to talk about the summative assessments our students take is CAASPP which stands for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress.

The CAASPP system has three main parts:

  1. SBAC: Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts and Math*
    * Students with significant cognitive disabilities, as designated in their active Individualized Education Program (IEP), are eligible to take the CAASPP California Alternate Assessments (CAA) for English Language Arts, Math, and Science.
  2. CAST: California Science Test (grade 5, 8, and once in high school)
  3. CSA: California Spanish Assessment (for CVESD Dual Language Spanish Immersion Programs)

To learn more about these state tests go to the Starting Smarter web page at: http://ca.startingsmarter.org/ or review the Parent Guides to Understanding at: http://cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.

Student Council

Thanks to the hard work of our student council!  They work all year to help around the school and community.  Because of their fundraising efforts, we were able to install a “Buddy Bench” next to the playground.  They will also share information about it on our  Robo Report.

Week in Review

WOW, What a busy week we had on campus!  The week started off with our reclassification ceremony.  We had 24 students earn this honor of maintaining their home language with also becoming proficient in English.  Sixth grade did an amazing job with their CAASPP testing. Then on Wednesday we were able to have a special breakfast with all of our military connected families.  Our teacher of the year, Shannon Cleator, was recognized at the school board meeting on Wednesday night.  On Thursday, second grade presented their annual wax museum projects.  Students were able to practice their public speaking along with researching famous people. First grade took a field trip to the library to enhance their love of reading.

Teaching your child about Acceptance and Respect

Over the past couple of weeks, we have seen an increase in students making hurtful comments. I ask that you have conversations with your child about acceptance and respect.

Our children will experience more change, see more places, learn more things, and be exposed to a greater variety of people and cultures than any other generation in the history of humankind. To succeed in this complex and diverse world, they’ll need to develop the capacity for acceptance and respect.

  • How to Promote Acceptance and Respect in Young Children
    • Make your child feel special, safe, and loved. Don’t be sparing with words of praise. A loved child learns to love.
    • Create learning opportunities about new places, people, and cultures. Expose your child to a variety of perspectives through books, songs, food, and cultural events and celebrations.
    • Intervene when you hear or see intolerant behavior. Don’t be punitive — help your child learn healthier ways to interact with others.
    • Use positive comments to shape and reinforce your child’s behavior. Avoid giving instruction using “no” (such as “Don’t do that”). Offering helpful alternatives (“Be gentle with your brother”) will be more productive.
    • Model respect. Your child will learn to reach out and be sensitive and respectful of others by watching how you discuss, relate to, and value other people.

YMCA Giving Campaign

If you were still looking to support a worthwhile organization, I would encourage you to help us meet our other giving goal- our local YMCA.  We are very fortunate that we have the YMCA connected to our school!  They are able to provided needed services to many of families.  We have raised $1,194 of our campus goal of $1,500.00, please click on the link and support our local Y that gives back to many of our Robo Griffins!

Thanks to our PTA

Did you know that our PTA is giving every classroom $200 to updated their classroom libraries?  This will help to ensure that our students have diverse literature in every classroom on campus.  Thanks for always supporting PTA.

Medications at School

Medications are not permitted at school except when kept in the school Health Office. Parents of students who require medication prescribed for him/her by a physician during the regular school day must complete an “Authorization For Medication Administration” form and keep it on file in the school Health Office. This form authorizes office personnel to administer the medication to your child. A new form will need to be submitted at the beginning of each school year. This includes inhalers and Epipens which must be kept in the health office.  Students may not carry medication with them during the school day.
